Philadelphia Navy Yard | Bus Tour + Lunch

Building on its history as a place of production and innovation for the U.S. Navy, the Navy Yard today is a growing community where 170 companies and their 15,000 employees thrive. These companies occupy over 8 million square feet of office, industrial/ manufacturing, and research and development space. In July 2020, a partnership between Ensemble Real Estate Investments and Mosaic Development Partners was awarded exclusive development rights to 109 acres of land at the Navy Yard, where in 2022 the partnership began executing their $2.6B master development plan. This plan encompasses up to 3.0 MSF of lab and biomanufacturing space in partnership with Oxford Properties, 350,000 SF of retail space, 3,000 residential units and 450 hotel rooms. Learn how the Navy Yard has been transformed into the most successful commercial redevelopment of a former military facility anywhere in the country and how Ensemble/Mosaic plans to further establish the Navy Yard as a best-in-class vibrant and inclusive mixed-use community.

Located in Philadelphia’s University City neighborhood, the home of cell and gene therapy and emerging mRNA technologies , uCity Square is a 6.5 million-square-foot mixed-use community.   It consists of labs and office space, retail, residential and clinical space concentrated around an open-air public square. Surrounded by the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Wistar Institute  uCity Square is a center of connectivity for emerging biotech companies, residents, researchers, and the institutions. uCity Square is the linchpin that connects the surrounding neighborhoods to the rest of University City, opening pathways to access and inclusion. University City’s real estate sector, despite the challenges of the last two years, is well on its way to being Philadelphia’s second skyline, representing new inventory for commercial, institutional, public space, medical, and mixed-use projects. Significant progress has been made on Brandywine’s Schuylkill Yards master development, including the introduction of incubator space at B.Labs in Cira Centre. Other key developments, including the new Pavilion for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and Children’s Hospital’s Physician and Administration building and new patient tower.  Hear from leading real estate executives from Brandywine Realty Trust, Penn Medicine and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia on the growth and impact on development in the area that will further cement University City’s status as a major regional hub for employment, research, and places to live.

Building and Managing a Productive Team for Cultural Diversity, Inclusion and Equity
This personal development workshop discussion centers on the intersection of the emerging importance of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the workforce and the changing ways in which people work in a more hybrid, distributed ecosystem.  Recognized benefits of diversity include increased innovation, greater profitability, teams with better problem-solving skills.  Managers need a framework and process for collaboration and professional development.  This includes new approaches to hiring, mentoring, and performance evaluation, collaboration, communications, and learning facilitated in part by new technologies.  Attendees will gain a better understanding of how DEI objectives become a management tool which enhances both employee satisfaction and business success.

The Metaverse is Here Now: Incorporating Extended Reality into CRE Portfolio Strategies

Every company and brand have a unique story and culture to be experienced. The Metaverse and other virtual technologies offers an exciting new medium to be able to tell these stories and push well beyond the boundaries of physical environments through a fully immersive employee experience. To this end, Corporate Real Estate leaders have an opportunity to make these virtual spaces a part of their real estate portfolio, and will consider how these assets and experiences are evaluated and executed to meet the expectations of a new generation of talent or to support a more dispersed workforce.

This general session will provide high level insights on emerging talent workforce expectations including greater employer flexibility for work life balance. Employers are responding accordingly to attract new talent and to retain existing talent.

This General Session features Peter Cappelli, Professor of Management and Director of the Center for Human Resources at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and Karen Dougherty Buchholz, Executive Vice President of Administration for Comcast Corporation. Peter’s publications include “The Future of the Office” and “Talent on Demand”. Karen has led critical new Comcast initiatives and is engaged in many civic endeavors. She is also a member of the Board of Trustees at Drexel University.
